This is the first album Walter recorded with
his Brazilian Trio in the U.S. This is also the first album that
feature U.S. studio musicians on Wanderley's recordings. This LP
contained the hit smash Summer Samba. The album went
certified platinum in 1970.
Handwritten remarks on the back cover: "If
you like: Ella, Duke, Count, Sinatra . . .you'll love Walter
Wanderley's music.--Tony Bennett"
There is a Brazilian reissue of this LP as well
an Argentinian LP release.

[Verve by Request CD Reissue (U.S.) with Two Bonus Tracks]

[The 24-bit digitally-remastered Limited Edition Japanese CD Reissue
of "A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadness".
It features an LP-style slipcase for the CD.]

Note: This LP was a collaberation between Brazilian singer Astrud Gilberto and Walter Wanderley's Trio. It is the first U.S. LP where vocals appear on a Wanderley album.
This album also happens to contain what I
consider to be the best arrangement of my favorite Brazilian song of
all time, "Tristeza" (Goodbye Sadness), as well as my favorite
arrangement of "Summer Samba" that starts off in 3/4 time and segues
nicely into 4/4. This album is full of wonderful Wanderley
arrangements!

Personnel:
The Walter Wanderley Trio: Walter Wanderley--organ & piano; Claudio Slon--drums, Jose Marino--bass.
Astrud Gilberto, vocals; Bobby Rosengarden, percussion.
CD Reissue mentions Joao Gilberto--guitar--is
possibly on this album [Claudio Slon confirms that it was
Gilberto playing guitar on this album].
[Webmaster's Note: Although Bobby
Rosengarden is said to be pictured on this album, he was not a member
of the Walter Wanderley Trio as has been incorrectly attributed to
him by other sources. The Trio members were Walter Wanderley, Claudio
Slon and Jose Marino, only. Bobby always played percussion on these
Trio Albums/Verve and was a U.S. sideman along with other sidemen who
participated in some of these same Albums/Verve.]

The Walter Wanderley Trio, "Chegança", Verve [Japan] #_________
(2001).[24-bit digitally remastered CD Reissue]
This is the first Wanderley gatefold LP. It is
also the last Verve LP that was made by all his original trio
members. And it's my most favorite of the U.S.-made Wanderley Albums/Verve.
I still get just as excited when hearing the opening bars of
"Chegança" as I did in 1966!
