"For example, you can read
that Claus Ogerman had last year a fracture of the leg and therefore he
has a cane when he comes into the room in a Munich Luxury Hotel. Diana
Krall's wish was that he was with her during the interview time in Rio
while performing the concerts, but he says, he couldn't come to Rio
because of his foot. He was never never in Rio at all. In the
sixties, the Brazilians were all in New York.
He has a fear of unknown orchestras, and he
thinks that in Rio the orchestras are good in rhythm but that the
symphonic orchestras are not of the quality of those in Germany,
England and USA. Jobim also didn't want to make big orchestral sessions
in Rio.
Then there is the question as to why he does
not give many interviews. He says I'm not a composer like Cole Porter
or Antonio Carlos Jobim, I'm only the arranger. That is someone who
makes the frames for the pictures of others. Therefore, the title of
the interview is "The Framemaker"..
The interviewer speaks about old projects
like "Bill Evans with Symphony Orchestra". And that this production is
Tony Bennett's favourite LP, and Ogermans tells about all night long
telephone calls with Glenn Gould.
He says that his best works are: Choir-music
about texts of Georg Heym, Tagore-Lieder with B. Fassbender, Preludio
and Chant with G. Kremer. "About this, I'm proud of". But he finds his
version of Stan Getz' "The Look of Love" also totally fine."
