Very Honorable Mention

The Firehouse Five Plus Two

Because this is a site dedicated to Disney music, I decided to include this one entry even though this group did not record on any of Disney's own labels.  The group is called the "Firehouse Five Plus Two" and they were made up of animators who worked for Walt Disney Studios - but who also enjoyed playing jazz on the side.  And they were good at it!  The story goes that one day during the lunch hour while the animators were playing their instruments along with a record player, the record player broke - but they kept on playing.  They were successful enough to cut several LPs and singles, made many personal appearances and were even included in some television shows and movies.

Members of the Firehouse Five Plus Two included:

Danny Alguire — cornet
Harper Goff — banjo
Ward Kimball — trombone, siren, tambourine, sound effects, leader
Clarke Mallery — clarinet
Monte Mountjoy — drums
Erdman (Ed) Penner — bass saxophone on early recordings, but later switched to tuba
Frank Thomas — piano

Later, other Disney artists joined in; Jimmy MacDonald (head sound effects man, who also did the voice of Mickey Mouse), George Probert, Dick Roberts, Ralph Ball and George Bruns (composer/conductor). The band was active from 1949 to 1972, playing and recording while never giving up their day jobs as animators and artists with the Walt Disney Studios.  Listed below is one of their albums that was recorded during a live performance at Disneyland - and you can read all about them in the Liner Notes link:
