Little Deuce Coupe
Why Do Fools Fall In Love
Liner Notes (by Derek Johnson, New
Musical Express):
"Although the British climate may not be condusive to
surf-riding along our coast-line, the music which has
become associated with this sporting craze is ideally
suited to our pop music tastes. Basically,
surfing music is an offshoot of the twist -- but with
a somewhat heavier rolling, swelling beat which
simulates the breakers of the Pacific Ocean sweeping
into the Californian shore. It is undoubtedly
one of the most colourful forms of popular music, for
not only is it remarkably applicable to the sport from
which it takes its name, but also its infectiously
driving beat is as compulsively rhythmic as any
current craze. It’s a best which simply cannot
be ignored and which defies you to remain static -- a
happy, effervescent, light-hearted rhythm guaranteed
to start the solitary listener toe-tapping and finger
clicking, and to set any party rocking and
rolling. The principal delight of surf music is
that, whilst it conjures up visions of sub-tropical
beaches and white-flecked waves rushing shoreward, it
can be enjoyed by people who have never even seen a
surf-board and know nothing of the sport itself -- and
goodness knows, there are plenty of uninitiated
surfers in this country!
The Beach Boys are among America’s most popular
exponents of surf music, and indeed enjoyed a chart
entry in this country with their recording of Surfin’
U.S.A. towards the end of 1963. A five-man team
hailing from Hawthorne in California, where they all
attended high school, the Beach Boys consist of three
brothers (Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson), their cousin
Mike Love, and a school friend David Marks.
These lads never fail to give the impression of
thoroughly enjoying themselves -- as indeed they
are. The stimulating character of the music they
purvey, plus their own dynamic bonhomie, infuses a
sense of well-being and good cheer into the
listener. For who can help experiencing “Fun,
Fun, Fun” as the Beach Boys give out with their own
distinctive brand of contagious, hypnotic, insidious
rhythm?"
Arranged and produced by Brian
Wilson.
